1998 Road Rage Case: Navjot Singh Sidhu Will Be Freed Tomorrow After Serving 1 Year In Jail

Navjot Singh Sidhu, a former cricketer turned politician, is expected to be released from Patiala Central Jail on Saturday. He has been imprisoned since May 20 of last year, when the Supreme Court sentenced him to one year in prison in a 1988 road rage case.

“This is to inform everyone that Sardar Navjot Singh Sidhu will be released from Patiala Jail tomorrow (as informed by the relevant authorities),” he stated in a tweet.

In 1988, Navjot Singh Sidhu was charged in a road rage incident. The case concerns the death of a man, Patiala resident Gurnam Singh, in December 1988, after Sidhu and a friend assaulted him.

Sidhu and Rupinder Singh Sandhu reportedly parked their Gypsy in the center of the road near the Sheranwala Gate crossing in Patiala on December 27, 1988. When the 66-year-old Gurnam Singh arrived in a car at the location and asked them to move aside.

Sidhu then thrashed Singh. He also allegedly took Singh’s car keys before fleeing, preventing him from seeking medical help.

Sidhu was sentenced to one-year rigorous imprisonment by the Supreme judge in the case on May 20, last year, after surrendering before a court in Patiala.

Sidhu will be released early due to his excellent behaviour.
