The bar associations throughout Delhi have decided to continue their protest and abstain from judicial work in order to support their demand for a prompt investigation into the death of Advocate Virender Narwal.
The associations have decided to refrain from work on Monday following the death of Advocate Narwal. However, bar association officers have stated that their protest will continue until April 9, 2023.
The decision to extend the protest was made by the Coordination Committee of the All District Bar Associations of Delhi, according to Advocate Vineet Jindal, Secretary General North Delhi Lawyers Association.
“Lawyers are facing death threats every day. Despite repeated requests, police have refused to lend any protection to us. Therefore, we are protesting for the speedy investigation into the brutal murder of Advocate Narwal. We are also demanding that the government bring in the Advocates Protection Act,” Advocate Jindal stated.
On Saturday, two bike-riding assailants named Naresh and Pradeep shot and killed advocate Virender Kumar Narwal in Delhi’s Dwarka area. Police say Mr Narwal was killed because of a 36-year feud with Pradeep, his grandfather allegedly murdered Pradeep’s uncle in 1987. Advcoate Narwal is also accused of putting legal obstacles in some land compensation Pradeep was expecting.
Pradeep, a professional wrestler, found himself in financial difficulty as a result of this. He attempted to murder Advocate Narwal again in 2017, but the lawyer escaped unharmed and his driver was injured.
Advocate Narwal received police protection after the attack but it was withdrawn during the Covid pandemic in 2021.
