The Delhi High Court on Wednesday asked various bar associations to meet with senior Delhi Police officials to discuss the issue of increasing security in court complexes in the national capital.
This development comes just days after a debarred lawyer shot at a woman at Saket Court in Delhi.
A division bench of Chief Justice Satish Chandra Sharma and Justice Subramonium Prasad passed the order while hearing a suo motu Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed after the shooting at the Rohini court complex in September 2021.
The bench took note of the incident in Saket court today and directed that the authorities consult with the police and discuss the suggestions to increased security within two weeks.
Advocate KC Mittal appeared on behalf of the Saket Court Bar Association stated that while some of their suggestions had been implemented, there were still issues that needed to be addressed.
Appearing for the Delhi Police, Advocate Santosh Tripathi claimed that the department had taken steps in accordance with the Court’s previous order. He stated that CCTV cameras are being installed and that the Delhi Police has done “fantastic work.”
After the direction, the bench scheduled the matter for further consideration in July 2023.
On April 21, a woman was shot four times by a debarred lawyer named Kameshwar Singh alias Manoj Singh.
This was the second shooting reported from a Delhi court complex in less than two years.
Three people, including alleged gangster Jitender Gogi, were reportedly killed inside a courtroom at the Rohini court complex on September 24, 2021.
Several petitions on the subject were then filed in the High Court. The High Court also issued a suo motu PIL on the subject and issued several directives to police and other authorities to increase security in court complexes.
