Congress Leader BV Srinivas Moves SC Seeking Relief In Relation To FIR In Assam Over Sexual Harassment Complaint

Srinivas BV, National President of the Indian Youth Congress, has approached before the Supreme Court on Monday seeking stay of proceedings in relation to a FIR filed in Assam on a sexual harassment complaint registered by an expelled party member.

Senior Advocate Devadatt Kamat mentioned his case before Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud on Monday, requesting an urgent hearing.

“An opposition leader is being hounded in Assam,” Kamat remarked.

The CJI decided to hear the case on May 15, 2023.

A single bench of the Gauhati High Court had dismissed his petition seeking to quash the FIR on May 4.

The High Court also dismissed another petition filed by Srinivas seeking anticipatory bail.

A single bench led by Justice Ajit Borthakur observed that there is no evidence that the FIR is “politically motivated” and declined to intervene, noting that the probe is in its early stages.

While dismissing the plea, the bench also chastised Srinivas’s counsel for implying that judges on the verge of retirement would pass decisions in favour of the government in the hope of receiving post-retirement perks.
