Maha: Man Convicted In Theft Case Gets 6-Year Prison Term

A man who was jailed for over six years after being arrested for a go down theft case in Maharashtra’s Thane district has been recently sentenced to a 6-year simple imprisonment by the court.

The Additional Public Prosecutor SH Mhatre told the court that on the night of 19-20 May 2016, the accused along with two other co-accused trespassed into a go down and stole yarn worth over 4 lacs.

The accused was produced in front of the court for the framing of charges and he voluntarily pleaded guilty to the charge under sections 457and 380 of the IPC, the judge noted that the accused is a labourer and the sole bread-earner of the family, also there was no one to look after his family.

Therefore, the court held that the trial that was not put in motion earlier and still the accused was in jail but now that the accused has pleaded guilty to the offence, it has encouraged the court to mitigate the punishment for the accused.

The court also imposed a fine of Rs 2,000 on the accused, and Section 428 of the CrPC was applied, which pertains to the period of detention undergone by the accused. The judge in his order stated that the accused was produced before the court for framing of the charge.
