SC Dismisses Plea Against Stand-Up Comedian Anubhav Singh Bassi for Allegedly Insulting Lawyers

Anubhav Singh Bassi

The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed a petition filed by Advocate Farhat Warsi, seeking action against stand-up comedian Anubhav Singh Bassi for allegedly insulting lawyers in his recent show ‘Bas Kar Bassi.’

Advocate Warsi claimed that Bassi’s comedy show demeaned the legal community as a whole.

However, the bench, comprising Justice SK Kaul and Sudhanshu Dhulia, expressed reluctance to entertain the plea against a stand-up comedy show.

The court remarked, “Do you not have something better to do; and you are practicing (law) for 20 years you say? Dismissed. Not a matter for Article 32.”

The bench further emphasized that it is the responsibility of lawyers themselves to defend their community.

“Let other lawyers take care of themselves. You don’t have to defend the entire community. You take care of yourself,” the bench stated.

The petition alleged that Anubhav Singh Bassi portrayed the lawyer community in a negative light in his show titled ‘Bas Kar Bassi’.

“In Bas Kar Bassi he has defamed the judiciary, legal profession and lawyers,” the counsel submitted.
