Congress leader Jagdish Tytler filed for anticipatory bail in a Delhi court on Tuesday. He is an accused of killing in Pul Bangash Area of Delhi during the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. Special Judge Vikas Dhull, who issued notice to the CBI and sought response by August 2.
Earlier, on July 26, the court summoned Tytler for August 5 after taking cognizance of a charge sheet filed in the case. The CBI filed the charge sheet against Tytler on May 20.
The Pul Bangash area witnessed 3 fatalities and the burning of a gurdwara on November 1, 1984, a day after the assassination of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi by her Sikh bodyguards.
According to the charge sheet submitted to the court, the CBI alleged that Tytler “incited, instigated, and provoked” the mob that gathered at Pul Bangash Gurdwara in Azad Market, leading to the gurdwara’s destruction and the killings of 3 Sikhs, namely Thakur Singh, Badal Singh, and Guru Charan Singh.
The CBI charged Tytler under sections 147 (rioting) and 109 (abetment) read with 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), among others.
