Simplifying Legal Language: PM Modi’s Vision for Inclusive Laws in India

Simplifying Legal Language, International Lawyers Conference,

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the ongoing efforts of his government to simplify and translate laws into various Indian languages during his speech on Saturday in Vigyan Bhawan on the occasion of International Lawyers Conference . PM Modi once again commended Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud, for his role in ensuring that judgment orders are accessible in multiple Indian languages.

In his inaugural address at the international lawyers’ conference, PM Modi underscored the significance of the language used in the drafting of laws and the judicial process in upholding justice.

“Our approach in the Government of India is two fold when it comes to lawmaking,” he addressed the legal community. “One version will be in the language you are accustomed to, while the other will be in a language that the common man in our country can easily comprehend and embrace as their own”- Modi highlighted the historical practice of drafting laws in a convoluted manner.

He lauded the legal community, recognizing the judiciary and the bar as longstanding guardians of India’s justice system. He credited them with playing pivotal roles in India’s struggle for independence, mentioning luminaries such as Mahatma Gandhi, BR Ambedkar, Jawaharlal Nehru, and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

The Prime Minister noted that this conference coincides with a period of significant developments in India, including the passage of the Women’s Reservation Bill in Parliament, which he believed would provide impetus to women-led development. He also touched upon India’s achievements at the G20 summit and the successful Chandrayaan mission.

Modi reiterated India’s commitment to becoming a developed nation by 2047, highlighting the necessity of a robust and equitable justice system as the foundation for this goal. He emphasized that impartial justice is instrumental in building global trust in India.”
