In the last five years, the Central government has transferred 324 cases to the National Investigation Agency (NIA), as disclosed by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) in a written response to a query in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday. Union Minister of State for Home, Nityanand Rai, provided this information, stating that these cases were handed over to the NIA between December 1, 2018, and November 30, 2023.
The MHA entrusted these cases to the NIA based on the severity of the situations, considering the agency’s specialization in investigating terrorism-related incidents nationwide and other matters under its jurisdiction.
Responding to a query about the number of cases with court verdicts in the last five years and the instances where the accused were convicted, the Minister shared data indicating that between December 1, 2018, and November 30, 2023, judgments were delivered in 84 cases. Of these, the accused were convicted in 81 cases.
The data further reveals a breakdown of these cases over the specified period. Till November 30 of the current year, there were 15 cases with judgments, followed by 31 in 2022, 15 in 2021, nine in 2020, and 14 in 2019. Additionally, a total of 15 accused were convicted until November 30 of the current year, 30 in 2022, 15 in 2021, nine in 2020, and 12 in 2019.
