Delhi’s Patiala House Court has granted the Police an extension to complete its investigation in the Parliament security breach case.
Additional Sessions Judge Hardeep Kaur allowed 45 more days for the police to conclude the investigation, following an application by the prosecution. The application cited pending reports and the time-consuming task of scrutinizing voluminous data as reasons for the extension.
The Delhi Police had requested a three-month extension to finalize the investigation. Without the court’s authorization, the probe agency would have had three months from the date of the arrest to complete their inquiries. According to the law, if the investigative agency fails to meet the stipulated deadline, the accused in custody is entitled to statutory bail rights.
During a significant security breach on the anniversary of the 2001 Parliament terror attack, two individuals-Sagar Sharma and Manoranjan D entered the Lok Sabha chamber from the public gallery during Zero Hour. They discharged yellow gas from canisters, shouted slogans, and were subsequently subdued by Members of Parliament.
Simultaneously, two other accused-Amol Shinde and Neelam Azad sprayed colored gas from canisters while chanting “tanashahi nahi chalegi” (dictatorship will not prevail) outside the Parliament premises.
Presently, the accused, along with Lalit Jha and Mahesh Kumawat, are in judicial custody.
