In a conference that included the attendance of eminent personalities such as Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, Attorney General R Venkataramani, and Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, the Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud, took the stage to point out that he believes that the new criminal justice legislation will mark a pivotal moment for Indian society, envisioning a considerable restructuring of the nation’s legal system.
At the conference on “India’s Progressive Path in the Administration of the Criminal Justice System,” the Chief Justice displayed his firm belief in the newly enacted laws and went on to say that the implementation of these laws was essential and that they were aimed at protecting the rights of victims and would ensure efficient investigation and prosecution of crimes.
CJI, DY Chandrachud, went on to say that because of these laws, they would function more efficiently and effectively, as every stage of criminal law, starting right from the registration of the FIR (first information report) to the delivery of the final judgment, would be digitalized thanks to the upcoming legislation.
The recently passed legislation, including the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and the Bharatiya Sakshya Act, are set to revolutionize India’s criminal justice system upon their implementation starting July 1. These laws were approved by Parliament on December 21 of the preceding year and received the assent of President Droupadi Murmu on December 25, representing a notable milestone in India’s legal development.
