Police have apprehended 35 individuals in relation to a clash that erupted between two factions subsequent to the destruction of the graves of a Sufi saint and his relatives at the Pirana shrine situated on the outskirts of Ahmedabad, an official confirmed on Thursday.

According to the official, during the altercation that transpired on Tuesday night, members of both groups hurled stones at each other, resulting in injuries to several individuals.

Hate or Harmony?

The management of the Pirana shrine falls under the purview of the Imamshah Bawa Roza Trust, which has historically symbolized Hindu-Muslim harmony, boasting trustees from both communities.

“Following disagreements, one of the trustees demolished the graves of Sufi saint Imamshah Bawa and his family members at the Pirana shrine on Tuesday night, instigating members of the two communities to engage in stone-pelting,” explained Ahmedabad (Rural) Superintendent of Police Omprakash Jat.

Upon learning of the situation, residents from both communities assembled at the shrine late into the night. Simultaneously, law enforcement personnel swiftly arrived at the scene to restore order and ensure public safety.

“However, the altercation escalated into stone-throwing between the two sides, resulting in injuries to several individuals, including police officers,” Jat added.

Complaints

Following the incident, complaints were lodged by both parties against unidentified perpetrators. “In connection to the incident, authorities have arrested 35 individuals under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including charges related to attempted murder, rioting, and damage to public property,” stated Jat.

Subsequently, police patrols were intensified in the area, successfully bringing the situation under control.
