Iran's Supreme Court Overturns Toomaj Salehi's Death Sentence

Iran’s Supreme Court has overturned its decision against rapper Toomaj Salehi. Iran’s Supreme Court had earlier issued a death sentence against the rapper.

Facts of the Case

Renowned rapper Toomaj Salehi had backed and supported the nationwide protests, which were in solidarity with Mahsa Amini’s death. Jina Mahsa Amini, who was arrested by the morality police for failing to wear the hijab properly, Later, she died in police custody. Since 1983, following the 1979 Islamic Revolution, it has been mandatory for women in Iran to cover their neck and head.

Toomaj Salehi was vocal about this issue. He not only supported the nationwide protests but also made songs criticizing the Iranian government. On October 20, 2022, Toomaj Saheli was arrested. And later in April, he was convicted of capital offenses of “corruption on Earth” and “assistance in sedition.” For which the Iranian Court sentenced Salehi to death.

Court’s Orders

Toomaj Salehi’s advocate,  Amir Raisian, posted on “X” and confirmed that the rapper’s death sentence has been overturned. Raisian emphasized that the Supreme Court intervened to prevent a significant judicial error. The court also found that Salehi’s previous sentence of six years and three months was flawed due to procedural irregularities stemming from multiple charges against him. His advocate further confirmed that the court has ordered a retrial in this matter.
