The Tripura Police have arrested 16 Rohingyas, including seven women, for allegedly entering India from Bangladesh without valid documents. Acting on a tip-off, police apprehended 11 suspected Rohingyas at the Dharmangar Inter State Bus Terminal (ISBT) in North Tripura district on Thursday evening, as per Dharmanagar police station OC Himadri Sarkar.
“During interrogation, it was discovered that the 11 individuals had crossed the international border from a Rohingya refugee camp in Bangladesh and were waiting for transportation to Guwahati by bus. We arrested them and presented them before a local court,” Sarkar said. He also noted that seven juveniles were detained for illegally entering Indian territory.
In another incident from North Tripura’s Churaibari area, police intercepted a Guwahati-bound bus and asked passengers to verify their identities. Among them, five Rohingyas failed to produce proof of nationality, a senior officer reported.
“They were initially detained for questioning. During interrogation, the five admitted to coming from a camp in Bangladesh and planning to travel to Hyderabad via Guwahati,” said Pritimoy Chakma, the second officer-in-charge at Churaibari police station. They had crossed the international border through Boxangar in Tripura’s Sepahijala district, Chakma added.
