Kiren Rijiju, Union Law Minister Writes To CJI UU Lalit Requesting Him To Recommend His Successor

Kiren Rijiju, the Union Law Minister has written a letter to the current Chief Justice of India UU Lalit requesting him to name his successor in office. On November 8, CJI Lalit is set to retire. Thus, the letter has been written as per the MoP on the appointment of the Chief Justice of India and Supreme Court Judges.
The Hon’ble Minister of Law and Justice sent a letter to the Hon’ble Chief Justice of India for sending his recommendations for appointment of his successor, as per the MoP on appointment of Chief Justice of India and Supreme Court Judges.
However, as per the convention, the outgoing CJI names the senior-most judge as his or her successor before demitting office after the Union Minister of Law and Justice and at the appropriate time seeking the recommendation of the outgoing Chief Justice of India for the appointment of the next Chief Justice of India.
At present, Justice Dhananjaya Yeshwant Chandrachud is the senior-most judge after the CJI and is likely to be recommended to become the 50th Chief Justice of India. Further, his tenure would of two years from November 9, 2022, to November 10, 2024.
Justice Yeshwant Vishnu Chandrachud, the father of Justice Chandrachud was the 16th Chief Justice of India from 1978 to 1985.
