Plea in Supreme Court Challenging Demolition of Mangolpuri Mosque

Masjid

A plea has been filed before the Supreme Court against the Delhi High Court’s refusal to stay the demolition of Muhammadi Jama Masjid and Madarsa located in Mangolpuri’s Y Block in New Delhi.

A bench comprising Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice R. Mahadevan has scheduled the case for hearing on August 1 after it was mentioned by Senior Advocate Sanjay Hegde.

Initially, Senior Advocate Hegde informed a bench headed by CJI DY Chandrachud that the demolition was set to take place on Tuesday (July 30). CJI Chandrachud then instructed Hegde to move the Bench led by Justice Khanna. The plea arises from a Delhi High Court order that refused to stay the demolition of the mosque.

According to the appellants, the mosque is not an encroachment as alleged in a writ petition before the High Court by ‘Save India Foundation’. The appeal before the Supreme Court seeks time to file documents showing that the land was allotted to the mosque in 1979.
