Justice DY Chandrachud Takes Oath As The 50th Chief Justice Of India

On Wednesday, Justice Dhananjaya Y Chandrachud took oath as the 50th Chief Justice of India. The oath of the newly sworn-in Chief Justice was administered by the President of India Draupadi Murmu at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.
Previously, the CJI UU Lalit on October 11, had recommended the name of Justice Chandrachud as his successor, which on October 17 was accepted by the President.
The DY Chandrachud as the Chief Justice of India will have a term of over two years till November 10, 2024, he will be making it one of the longest terms for a CJI in the recent past years.
Justice YV Chandrachud, the father of Justice Chandrachud was the 16th Chief Justice of India serving from February 2, 1978 to July 11, 1985. Justice Chandrachud is a part of the Constitution Benches which decriminalized consensual homosexuality, recognized privacy as a fundamental right under Article 21, the decriminalized adultery, he is being known for his progressive and liberal judgements, one of the most recent verdicts given by him for upholding the rights of unmarried women to seek abortion of pregnancy up to 24 weeks. He is also being a part of the majority which upholding the right of women of all ages to enter the Sabarimala temple. Justice DY Chandrachud also was a member of the 5-judge bench which decided the Ayodhya-Babri Masjid case.
On May 13, 2016, Justice Chandrachud was elevated to the Supreme Court. Before that he being the Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court from 31 October 2013. His career in judicial started on 29 March 2000, when he was appointment as a judge of the Bombay High Court. From 1998, he was the Additional Solicitor General of India, until he was being appointed as a judge. In the year 1988. He was also designated as a Senior Advocate by the Bombay High Court.
He has undergone BA with Honours in Economics from St Stephen’s College, New Delhi. Justice Chandrachud completed LLB course from Campus Law Centre, Delhi University and obtained LLM degree and a Doctorate in Juridical Sciences (SJD) from Harvard Law School, USA.
