Meghalaya High Court Imposes Ban on Single-Use Plastics

Meghalaya High Court

The Meghalaya High Court has imposed a ban on single-use plastics in temples and shops across the state.

A bench headed by Chief Justice S. Vaidyanathan, has also advocated for the introduction of tetra pak cartons, which are primarily made from paper and could serve as an effective alternative to plastics. The fight against plastics is not only an environmental issue but a critical battle for the health and future of our planet.

“To begin with, such a move can be initiated from temple premises. Temple authorities must ensure that no plastic bags are used in and around worshipping places,” the bench stated.

“CCTV cameras shall be installed in all temples so that if anyone carries plastics inside the temple, it can be curtailed to some extent,” it added.

The bench also imposed a ban on shops from storing and using plastic bags, proposing heavy fines for violators.

“If any shops are found to have stored plastic bags, a heavy fine should be imposed on them. If the practice continues, such shops should be sealed,” the bench remarked.

Directing the state government to be vigilant, the bench ordered that plastic items be stopped at the entry level.

“Periodical raids should be conducted in all shops, and the Government of Meghalaya should consider imposing significant fines against those who use plastics within the state,” it said, adding that strict enforcement of the law will aid in eradicating plastics from society.

Citing how stringent laws in Singapore compel the same Indian who discards rubbish on the ground in his own country to dispose of waste in designated bins in Singapore, the bench remarked, “Strict prohibitory measures and imposition of heavy fines on violators are the only solutions to eliminate plastics from society, in addition to spreading awareness about the menace of plastics.” The High Court has also directed the state government to file an affidavit on the matter.
