The Supreme Court on Monday has rejected the West Bengal government’s appeal against the Calcutta High Court’s decision to grant bail to Sayan Lahiri, one of the organizers of the August 27 protest march to the state secretariat.
Justices J B Pardiwala and Manoj Misra ruled that the Calcutta High Court had reasonably granted bail. Lahiri, a leader of the Paschim Banga Chhatra Samaj, was arrested on August 27 after the rally he led allegedly turned violent, resulting in property damage and assaults on police officers. The protest was held in response to the rape and murder of a trainee woman doctor at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital.
The Calcutta High Court had earlier ordered Lahiri’s release from police custody by 2 p.m. on Saturday, following a bail application filed by his mother, Anjali. Lahiri was subsequently released by the Kolkata Police.
