‘Kalyug Has Arrived’: Allahabad HC Remarks On Maintenance Dispute Of Elderly Couple

Kalyug has arrived

The Allahabad High Court recently remarked that “Kalyug has arrived” during proceedings concerning a maintenance dispute between an elderly couple in their late 70s.

The Court was hearing an application filed by 80-year-old Munesh Kumar Gupta, who challenged a family court’s order requiring him to pay ₹5,000 in maintenance to his wife.

Justice Saurabh Shyam Shamshery noted, “It appears that Kalyug has arrived, as a couple aged approximately 75-80 years is engaged in a legal battle over maintenance.” Gupta and his 76-year-old wife have been embroiled in a property dispute since 2018, which escalated to police involvement and led to their referral to a family counseling center.

As the conflict remained unresolved, the couple began living separately. Gupta’s wife subsequently filed a plea in family court seeking ₹15,000 in alimony, while Gupta’s monthly pension is approximately ₹35,000. In a February 16 order, the family court directed Gupta to pay ₹5,000 in alimony. Gupta then appealed this decision to the High Court.

The High Court has issued a notice to the wife regarding the matter and scheduled the case for final hearing, expressing hope that the parties might reach a settlement by that time. Advocates Ghanshyam Das Mishra and Sunil Kumar Shukla represented Gupta in the proceedings.
