Abduction Case: SC Upholds Anticipatory Bail To Bhavani Revanna

The Supreme Court on Friday has upheld the Karnataka High Court’s decision to grant anticipatory bail to Bhavani Revanna in connection with an abduction case.

The bench, comprising Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan, noted that Bhavani, aged 55-56, was a woman and that a chargesheet had already been filed in the case.

The court rejected a petition from the Karnataka SIT, which sought to contest the High Court’s bail order. Bhavani Revanna, the mother of suspended JD(S) leader Prajwal Revanna, was granted bail with specific conditions, including restrictions on entering the districts of Mysuru and Hassan.

The High Court had determined that Bhavani had already cooperated by answering 85 questions posed by the SIT, making it unreasonable to claim she was uncooperative.

Bhavani faces charges under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including IPC 364A (kidnapping), 365 (kidnapping with intent secretly and wrongfully to confine), 109 (punishment for abetment), and 120B (criminal conspiracy).

Earlier, her husband, HD Revanna, was arrested in connection with the same kidnapping case on April 29 and later granted conditional bail by a special court for people’s representatives. The case, registered on April 28 at the Holenarasipura police station, involves serious allegations of sexual assault against their house help by both Revanna and his son, Prajwal Revanna, who is a Member of Parliament from Hassan.

This ruling reinforces the court’s recognition of the rights of individuals under legal scrutiny, particularly those who are cooperating with investigations while also highlighting the serious nature of the allegations involved.
