NHRC Takes Suo Motu Cognizance Of Reported Student Suicide In Guntur Private School

Suo Motu Cognizance

The National Human Rights Commission on Friday has taken suo motu cognizance of a disturbing media report regarding the alleged suicide of a 13-year-old girl student at a private school in Guntur district, Andhra Pradesh.

The incident reportedly occurred on October 23, 2024, within the hostel premises located in Reddypalem village.

The NHRC’s press release indicates that if the details of the report are accurate, they highlight a grave violation of the victim’s human rights. The girl, who was in the lawful custody of school authorities, reportedly took her own life in the hostel, raising serious concerns about the school’s environment and the care provided to its students.

In response to this incident, the NHRC has issued notices to the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police of Andhra Pradesh, demanding a comprehensive report within four weeks. This report should detail the status of the police investigation and the findings of the post-mortem examination, including the cause of death.

Additionally, the authorities are instructed to include information about any other inquiries conducted regarding this tragic event.

The NHRC’s proactive stance underscores the importance of safeguarding the rights of students, particularly in educational institutions where they should feel secure and supported.

The Commission aims to ensure that thorough investigations are conducted to address the circumstances surrounding the girl’s death and to prevent such incidents in the future.
