In the lastest development in RG Kar Rape and Murder Case, the Supreme Court on Tuesday sought a report from the National Task Force (NTF) over the safety of doctors.
The top court bench led by Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna has granted 12 weeks time for NTF to file the report.
The bench noted that recommendations from the NTF would allow both the central and state governments to decide further action.
The SC, on August 24, constituted the 9-member NTF committee in the backdrop of safety concerns of medical professionals after the RG Kar Case.
During the hearing of the case, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) also informed the court about its findings, highlighting suspicions of evidence tampering and corruption within the hospital premises.
CJI Khanna questioned the CBI about the stage of the trial. The CBI expressed hope that the hearings might conclude by next week.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the CBI, said that the accused have been categorized into three groups: those involved in rape and murder, those responsible for the incident, and those connected to the corruption aspect.
SG Mehta said that chargesheets had been filed, but the cases are being heard in different courts.
CBI also informed the court that it is awaiting approval from the West Bengal government to prosecute two government officials.
The SC to hear the matter next on March 17, 2025.
