Businessman Raj Kundra on Tuesday raised concerns about the Enforcement Directorate’s decision to seize his properties in connection with the Bitcoin scam involving Amit Bhardwaj.
Speaking with media, Kundra explained that he met Bhardwaj when he was considered a respected businessman and had facilitated an introduction between him and an Israeli contact.
“This introduction has caused me significant trouble, resulting in the attachment of my properties,” Kundra reflected on the situation.
He pointed out that the attachment order explicitly stated there was no evidence linking him to any illicit funds. “The order clearly mentions there is no proof that any funds went to Raj Kundra. Amit Bhardwaj, the so-called ‘crypto king,’ was a well-regarded businessman. I met him and knew he was working on bitcoin mining. Since I had a friend in Israel who was an expert in this field, I connected them,” he elaborated.
Kundra also questioned the ED’s role in investigating him, given his background. “As a British citizen, I met Bhardwaj in Dubai, and there was an Israeli party involved. So why is the ED involved in this?” he wondered.
Kundra further shared his shock over the ED’s recent actions, noting that he had been called as a witness six years ago and had cooperated fully at that time. He recounted providing all the necessary details during his previous interactions with the ED.
“Six years ago, I was called in as a witness and asked if I had dealings with Amit Bhardwaj. I went there six times and shared all the information. But now, in 2024, without any prior notice, my properties were attached. I don’t understand this. They asked me the same questions as they did six years ago. We will take this to court and we will win,” Kundra affirmed.
Earlier this year, in April, the ED seized properties worth Rs 97.79 crores belonging to Raj Kundra and his wife Shilpa Shetty, alleging that they had raised substantial amounts of money through Bitcoin investments. The ED also accused the couple of making false promises to the public, offering a 10% return in Bitcoin.
Furthermore, it was revealed that Raj Kundra had received 285 Bitcoins from Bhardwaj, the mastermind behind the Gain Bitcoin Ponzi scheme. These Bitcoins, which Kundra still possesses, are valued at approximately Rs 150 crores today.
