The Supreme Court strongly criticized Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Member of Parliament Nishikant Dubey for allegedly making derogatory remarks aimed at the judiciary.
The bench, headed by Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul, took serious exception to Dubey’s public statements and emphasized that attempts to malign the judiciary would not be tolerated.
The remarks came during a hearing concerning a petition filed by activist Saket Gokhale, who had raised concerns over Dubey’s public comments questioning judicial integrity. Without naming Dubey directly, the bench conveyed its displeasure over political figures making inflammatory statements against courts, especially in the midst of ongoing proceedings.
“Hate speech against the judiciary is unacceptable. People must understand that freedom of speech does not mean unchecked freedom to attack the institution,” Justice Kaul observed during the proceedings.
The Court reiterated the need to preserve the independence and dignity of the judiciary, warning that political leaders should exercise restraint and responsibility in their public commentary. The bench noted that while criticism is part of a healthy democracy, malicious attempts to undermine public trust in judicial processes cross the line.
Court has directed that the matter be listed for further hearing after the summer vacation.
