Big Setback For Rahul: Pune Court Rejects Request On Savarkar Heir’s Lineage

Rahul Gandhi

A Pune court has dismissed Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s application seeking information about the maternal lineage of Satyaki Savarkar, the grandnephew of Hindutva ideologue Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, in the ongoing criminal defamation case.

Gandhi had contended that the genealogical details were pertinent to establish the complainant’s legal standing and credibility in the case.

Case Back Ground

The court, however, found no merit in this argument, stating that the complainant’s relationship to Savarkar was adequately established through existing documentation. Consequently, the request to introduce additional genealogical evidence was deemed unnecessary and was rejected.

This development marks a significant point in the legal proceedings initiated by Satyaki Savarkar against Rahul Gandhi. The defamation case stems from remarks made by Gandhi during a speech in London in March 2023, where he allegedly described Savarkar as a British collaborator, a claim that Savarkar’s family contends is defamatory.

Legal experts suggest that the rejection of this plea may streamline the trial process, potentially leading to a more focused examination of the core issues at hand. However, the case continues to attract significant public and political attention, reflecting the ongoing debates surrounding historical narratives and their implications in contemporary discourse
