Kamal Haasan Seeks Karnataka HC Protection For Release Of Film ‘Thug Life’

Kamal Haasan

The makers of the Tamil film Thug Life, starring Kamal Haasan and directed by Mani Ratnam, have approached the Karnataka High Court seeking its release in the state amid growing backlash over a controversial remark made by the actor.

The plea was filed by a co-producer of Raajkamal Films International after boycott calls and a refusal by the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) to screen the film. The controversy stems from Kamal Haasan’s statement during the May 24 audio launch, where he said, “Tamil gave birth to Kannada”. The remark was widely criticised by Kannada groups and political leaders, including the BJP, for allegedly hurting sentiments.

Raajkamal Films contended in court that the comment was misinterpreted and taken out of context, clarifying that Haasan’s intention was to highlight cultural unity and show admiration for Kannada actor Shivarajkumar.

Shivarajkumar has publicly supported Haasan, saying the veteran actor has always respected Kannada and its people.

After receiving no response from Karnataka police on requests to ensure an undisturbed release, the production house moved the High Court. The case is pending hearing.

Thug Life, made on a ₹300 crore budget, is set for a global release on June 5, 2025, and marks the reunion of Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam after nearly 4 decades.

The film also stars Silambarasan TR, Trisha, Ashok Selvan, and Joju George, with music composed by A.R. Rahman.
