Kolkata Law College Gangrape: 4 Accused Produced In Alipore Court

Kolkata Law College Gangrape

All 4 accused in the alleged gangrape of a 24-year-old law student at South Calcutta Law College, Kasba, Kolkata, on June 25 were produced before the Alipore court on Tuesday.

The accused include Manojit Mishra, Zaib Ahmed, Pramit Mukhopadhyay, and a security guard named Pinaki.

Progress Report Submitted To Calcutta High Court

On July 10, the West Bengal government submitted a sealed progress report on the case to the Calcutta High Court. The report, along with the case diary, was presented before a division bench comprising Justice Soumen Sen and Justice Smita Das De.

The bench reviewed the victim’s statement under Section 183 of the Bharatiya Nyay Samhita and examined the medical records.

The court ordered that a copy of the progress report be handed over to the victim’s advocate, with strict instructions prohibiting its disclosure without prior permission from the court.

Investigation Praised By Victim’s Family

The victim’s family, through their legal counsel, expressed satisfaction with the ongoing investigation led by Kolkata Police’s Special Investigation Team. The police also filed a report detailing why earlier threats made against the victim were allegedly not acted upon by local officers.

Incident & Arrests Timeline

The alleged incident occurred inside the law college premises on June 25. Kolkata Police arrested the three primary accused—Manojit Mishra, Pramit Mukhopadhyay, and Zaib Ahmed—within 12 hours on June 30.

Initially, the Alipore Court sent the 3 main accused to police custody until July 8. The fourth accused, security guard Pinaki, was remanded to custody till July 4.

Court Questions College’s Role

In a related development, the Kolkata High Court sought the West Bengal government’s response to three Public Interest Litigations concerning the alleged gangrape.

The court also questioned why the governing body of South Calcutta Law College was not included as a party in the case, indicating concerns over institutional accountability.
