The Supreme Court on Tuesday stayed the Allahabad High Court’s order directing the Rampur MP-MLA court to proceed with trials against Mohammad Abdullah Azam Khan, son of former MLA Azam Khan.
The bench of Justices M.M. Sundresh and N. Kotiswar Singh also issued a notice to the Uttar Pradesh government on Abdullah’s appeal.
On July 23, the Allahabad High Court had dismissed Abdullah’s petitions seeking to quash two criminal cases against him—one concerning an alleged fake passport and the other about possession of two PAN cards.
BJP MLA Akash Saxena filed complaints accusing Abdullah of fraudulently obtaining a passport with a false date of birth—his passport lists September 30, 1990, while his academic records show January 1, 1993. Saxena also alleged that Abdullah submitted incorrect PAN details in his 2017 election affidavit, hiding the existence of a second PAN card.
The FIR also names Azam Khan, accusing him of orchestrating the fraud to enable his son’s election bid.
The Supreme Court’s stay temporarily halts the trial, pending further hearing.
