Kanhaiya Lal Tailor Murder Case: SC Rejects To Cancel Bail Of One Accused

Supreme Court of India

The Supreme Court on Tuesday refused to cancel the bail of Mohammad Javed, one of the accused in the 2022 Udaipur tailor Kanhaiya Lal murder case.

A bench of Justice M.M. Sundresh and Justice Satish Chandra Sharma observed that the trial has seen only eight of over 170 witnesses examined so far and also noted that Javed was a minor at the time of the crime.

The plea for cancellation of bail was filed by Kanhaiya Lal’s son along with the National Investigation Agency (NIA), which alleged that Javed had conducted a recce for the 2 prime accused before the killing. The Rajasthan High Court had earlier granted Javed bail, citing the lack of conclusive proof placing him at the scene.

The apex court, while refusing to interfere with the High Court order, disposed of both petitions.

Kanhaiya Lal, a tailor, was brutally beheaded inside his Udaipur shop on June 28, 2022, after allegedly posting content in support of suspended BJP leader Nupur Sharma.

The attackers, Mohammad Riaz Attari and Ghaus Mohammad, filmed the act and uploaded the video online, sparking nationwide outrage and concerns over radicalisation and communal violence.
