Sharjeel Imam Withdraws Bail Plea In Delhi Court To Contest Bihar Polls

Sharjeel Imam

Sharjeel Imam, an accused in the Delhi riots case, on Tuesday withdrew his plea for interim bail from the Karkardooma Court, allowing him to file his nomination papers for the Bihar Assembly elections.

The plea sought 14 days’ interim bail, from October 15 to October 29, enabling Imam to contest as an independent candidate from the Bahadurganj constituency.

During the hearing, Advocate Ahmed Ibrahim appeared before Additional Sessions Judge Sameer Bajpai and requested to withdraw the bail application, stating that Imam’s bail plea is currently pending before the Supreme Court.

The court instructed the counsel to formally submit the withdrawal application to the filing section.

Background

The Election Commission has scheduled Bihar’s Assembly polls in two phases: on November 6 and November 11, with votes counted on November 14. The polling for Bahadurganj, where Imam intends to contest, is set for the second phase on November 11.

Currently, the Bahadurganj seat is held by Mohammad Anzar Nayeemi, who was elected on an AIMIM ticket in 2020 but later joined the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD).

Case Details

The application highlighted that Imam has been in continuous judicial custody for over 5 years without any temporary release. It emphasized that he has no criminal antecedents and does not pose a threat to society.
