Love Turned Lethal: Kerala Court Hands Life Sentence to Spurned Lover for Murder

In a verdict delivered on May 13, a Kerala court sentenced Shyamjith M, found guilty of murdering his former girlfriend Vishnupriya, to life imprisonment along with a ₹2 lakh fine in the case of State of Kerala v Shyamjith M.

Additionally, Additional District and Sessions Judge AV Mridula imposed a 10-year rigorous imprisonment term on Shyamjith under Section 449 of the Indian Penal Code. The court, situated in Thalassery, specified that both sentences would run concurrently.

This judgment follows Shyamjith’s conviction on May 10 in a case registered by the Panur Police Station in 2022.

On October 22, 2022, while Vishnupriya was conversing with a friend at her residence in Kannur District, Shyamjith forcibly entered her home armed with a hammer and knife.

Subsequently, he brutally murdered her by slashing her throat, striking her head with the hammer, and inflicting multiple stab wounds. Prosecutors contended that Shyamjith, a former partner of Vishnupriya, sought revenge for their past relationship ending. Throughout the trial, the prosecution presented 73 witnesses who highlighted Shyamjith’s lack of remorse for the heinous crime.
