Supreme Court to Hear Petition Challenging Ban on SIMI

SIMI BAN CHALLENGED

The Supreme court on Thursday will hear a petitions challenging the ban on Student Islamic Movement of India (SIMI). The advocate appeared for the petitioner, informed the court that there is a batch of matters before the court pertaining to this issue. He pointed out that the first ban on SIMI was imposed in 2001 and the last ban renewed in 2019 will continue till 2024.

The ban on Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) was extended in 2019 when the Centre banned it for another 5 years.

The notification banning SIMI was passed by the Centre in exercise of the powers conferred by the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. The central government had declared SIMI as an ‘unlawful association’ and directed that the notification would have effect for a period of five years.
