1984 Anti-Sikh Riots: Delhi Court To Hear Case Against Jagdish Tytler On August 29

A Delhi court on Monday stated that it will hear case related to the Pul Bangash killings during the 1984 anti-Sikh riots in which Congress leader Jagdish Tytler is an accused on August 29.

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Vidhi Gupta Anand has postponed the proceedings for a week, following a request from the CBI to allow time for advancing arguments related to an application filed by Tytler. The application sought access to specific documents.

Tytler appeared through video conferencing during the proceedings.

The judge stated, “PP (Public Prosecutor) for CBI seeks some time to file reply to the aforesaid application. Be filed by next date of hearing with advance copy to Counsel for the accused. Matter be now put up for reply, if any/ arguments on the application / further proceedings on August 29.”

On August 4, Tytler was granted anticipatory bail by a sessions court, on a personal bond of Rs.1 lakh and one surety of an equal amount. The court also imposed several conditions on him, including refraining from tampering with evidence in the case and not leaving the country without permission.

Earlier, on July 26, the magisterial court summoned Tytler for August 5, following the cognisance of a supplementary charge sheet in the case. This charge sheet for the first time named the former union minister as an accused.

The tragic incident in question took place on November 1, 1984, in the Pul Bangash area of Delhi. During the aftermath of the assassination of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi by her Sikh bodyguards, three individuals lost their lives, and a gurdwara was set ablaze.”
