The Delhi High Court on Friday transferred the investigation into the deaths of three UPSC aspirants in Old Rajinder Nagar to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). This decision was made due to the seriousness of the incidents and the potential involvement of corruption by public servants.
The court also directed the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) to nominate a senior officer to oversee the CBI probe into the deaths of the Civil Services aspirants. Meanwhile, protests outside the coaching institutes in Delhi’s Rajinder Nagar continued for the sixth consecutive day on Friday, following the tragic deaths of the three UPSC aspirants in a flooding incident at an IAS coaching centre. The students have been protesting since July 27.
On August 1, Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi ordered officials to establish four libraries in memory of the three deceased UPSC aspirants. These public libraries, proposed to be set up by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), will be located in Rajinder Nagar, Mukherjee Nagar, Patel Nagar, and Ber Sarai.
Earlier, Delhi’s Tis Hazari court on Thursday granted bail to Manuj Kathuria, the SUV driver accused in the deaths of the three UPSC aspirants at the coaching centre in Old Rajinder Nagar. It was alleged that he drove his vehicle in a rash and negligent manner, causing water to enter the basement.
Additional Sessions Judge Rakesh Kumar-IV granted bail to Manuj Kathuria on furnishing a bail bond of Rs 50,000 and a surety in the like amount. However, his bail bond could not be furnished as the concerned and duty judicial magistrate had risen by the time the order was supplied to the counsel for the accused.
The Judge noted that from the perusal of the record, it appears the present accused was implicated with over-enthusiasm while he has been charged under section 105 of BNS, which is non-bailable.
