The Delhi High Court issued a notice to the Central and State governments, as well as the Delhi Police, on Thursday in response to a petition demanding the establishment of cow protection units in each district of the city.

A division bench of Chief Justice Satish Chandra Sharma and Justice Subramonium Prasad was hearing a petition filed by an activist named Ajay Gautam, who contended that the establishment of cow protection units will benefit both the people who slaughter cows and those who seek to protect them.

“My intention for filing this PIL is to stop the clashes that repeatedly breaks out between the two sides,” Gautam infomed the bench.

According to the petition, despite the presence of a significant number of police officers in Delhi, there have been numerous incidences of cow butchering.

“The Mewat/Nuhu of Haryana area, which is not far from Delhi, is famed for cow slaughters, and people living in this area come to Delhi at night and kidnap stray cows from the highways or cattle farms and dairies and take them to Mewat and slaughter them,” the plea stated.

The petition further claimed that around the time of Bakra-Id, when cow-smugglers break the horns of cows and put them in their tempos after dousing them in red chilly, more cases of cow torture and slaughter occur.

“Whenever a person who reveres Holy cow as his mother, witnesses such incidents of ill-treatment and tortures of cows, it becomes impossible for him to tolerate it and sometimes situation gone out of control … in many cases Gau Savek raid first on crime site before the police and in resulted conflict/clash reported between cow smugglers and cow sevaks… It is submitted that due to above reasons/incidents communal tension also increase and in resulted communal harmony disturb,” the plea alleged.

The matter is scheduled for further hearing on May 17,2023.
