Delhi HC Extends Interim Bail For Accused In UPSC Aspirants Death Case

The Delhi High Court on Friday extended the interim bail of 4 basement owners involved in the RAU’s IAS Study Circle case in Old Rajinder Nagar.

Justice Dinesh Kumar Sharma granted an extension until January 21, 2025, for Sarabjit Singh, Parvinder Singh, Tejinder Singh, and Harvinder Singh.

The Supreme Court had earlier stayed the requirement for the accused to deposit Rs. 2.5 crores with the Red Cross, a condition that the High Court had imposed on September 13 when granting them interim bail.

Additionally, the court stayed a similar order for RAU’s IAS Study Circle CEO, Abhishek Gupta, who had been required to deposit Rs. 5 crores with the Red Cross.

The High Court directed Advocate Abhijit Anand, representing the complainant Dalvin Suresh, to file a response to the applications, and scheduled the next hearing for January 21, 2025.

In the broader case involving the deaths of three UPSC aspirants, the Rouse Avenue court had granted interim bail to Gupta and coordinator Deshpal Singh on September 23, 2024. This matter is set to be heard by the trial court on December 7.

Earlier, the Delhi High Court had ordered action against illegal coaching centers operating in basements, requesting the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi to form a committee to monitor the situation, led by a retired High Court judge.

Furthermore, the court instructed the four co-owners to deposit Rs. 5 crores with the Red Cross Society and directed the CBI to submit a report on waterlogging in the area, including the rainfall data for the day of the incident.

The trial court initially rejected the bail applications of the 4 co-owners, holding them responsible for the illegal use of the basement as a coaching center.
