Delhi HC Extends Kuldeep Singh Sengar’s Interim Bail For One Month

The Delhi High Court on Monday has extended the interim bail of Kuldeep Singh Sengar, convicted in the Unnao rape case, by one month. Sengar had initially sought a five-month extension on medical grounds.

Sengar was first granted interim bail on December 5, 2024, for a health evaluation at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). After reviewing his medical report from AIIMS, the court decided to extend the bail for another month, subject to strict conditions.

According to the court’s directives, Sengar must remain at his designated residence, the address of which has been provided to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). He is permitted to leave only for medical appointments at AIIMS. Furthermore, he will be under constant surveillance by a Delhi Police constable, and only two visitors will be allowed to meet him at a time. A CBI officer will contact him daily to ensure compliance.

The bench comprising Justice Prathiba M Singh and Justice Amit Sharma has also allowed Sengar to employ one attendant for assistance. He has been instructed to surrender to the jail superintendent on January 20, 2025. The court has scheduled the next hearing in the case for January 27, 2025.

Explaining their decision, the bench stated, “Considering the overall medical condition of the Appellant, this Court is of the opinion that the period for which the suspension is being sought… [is justified]. However, in order to enable the Appellant to recover from his eye surgery, scrotal pain, and bleeding issues he is experiencing while defecating, the extension of interim bail for a period of one month is directed.”

This decision reflects the court’s attempt to balance Sengar’s medical needs with the ongoing legal process.
