Delhi HC Seeks ECI Response On Akhil Bharatiya Jan Sangh’s Plea For Election Symbol Allotment

The Delhi High Court on Tuesday issued notice to the Election Commission of India on a plea filed by political party Akhil Bharatiya Jan Sangh, seeking allotment of a common election symbol ahead of the upcoming Bihar assembly polls.

Petitioner Alleges Delay By ECI

The party, registered in 1989 but currently unrecognised, said it had applied to the ECI on June 2 under the Election Symbols (Reservation and Allotment) Order and sent a reminder on July 4. After receiving no response, it approached the court.

Right To Contest Undermined

The petition contended that denial of a common symbol would infringe upon the party’s constitutional and statutory right to contest elections. It also claimed historical links to the erstwhile Bharatiya Jan Sangh.

Justice Mini Pushkarna sought a response from the ECI and listed the matter for hearing on August 19.

Advocate Pranay Ranjan appeared for Akhil Bharatiya Jan Sangh, while Advocate Rohini Prasad accepted notice on behalf of the poll panel.
