Delhi HC Takes Suo Motu Cognizance Of Fire Incident At Mukherjee Nagar Coaching Centre

The Delhi High Court has recently taken suo motu cognizance of the recent fire incident at a coaching center in the Mukherjee Nagar area and has directed the authorities to assess the safety status of similar institutes.

A Division Bench of Justice Jasmeet Singh and Justice Vikas Mahajan acknowledged the news reports regarding the incident that occurred on 15th June, 2023.

The court has issued notices to the Delhi Fire Services, Delhi Police, Delhi government, and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). These authorities have been instructed to scrutinize the fire safety certificates and building plans of all coaching centers located in the national capital.

The matter has been referred to the bench led by the Chief Justice and is scheduled to be heard on July 3, 2023. Mukherjee Nagar holds significance as a major coaching hub. Disturbing videos of the fire incident depicted students using ropes to descend and save themselves from the fire.

According to reports, the fire originated from an electricity meter in the five-story building while approximately 250 students were attending classes. Another report indicated that more than 60 students were injured in the incident, with 11 of them still hospitalized.
