Delhi HC To Rule On Doctor’s Plea Against Ramdev’s Coronil Claims On Monday

The Delhi High Court is set to deliver its verdict on Monday regarding a petition filed by various doctors’ associations against Yoga guru Ramdev for his assertion that ‘Coronil’ is a “cure” for COVID-19.

This plea is part of a 2021 lawsuit by these doctors’ groups against Ramdev, his associate Acharya Balkrishna, and Patanjali Ayurveda. Justice Anup Jairam Bhambhani reserved the order on May 21 after hearing from all parties involved.

According to the lawsuit, Ramdev made “unsubstantiated claims” about ‘Coronil’ being a cure for COVID-19, despite the drug only being licensed as an “immuno-booster.”

The senior counsel representing the doctors sought a directive to prevent Ramdev and the other defendants from making similar statements in the future.

Three Resident Doctors’ Associations from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in Rishikesh, Patna, and Bhubaneswar, along with the Association of Resident Doctors from the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education & Research in Chandigarh, the Union of Resident Doctors of Punjab (URDP), the Resident Doctors’ Association at Lala Lajpat Rai Memorial Medical College in Meerut, and the Telangana Junior Doctors’ Association in Hyderabad, brought the case to the high court in 2021 against Ramdev and others.

They accused Ramdev of spreading misinformation and using a marketing strategy to boost sales of products like ‘Coronil,’ which was touted as an alternative treatment for COVID-19.

On October 27, 2021, the high court issued summons to Ramdev and others, acknowledging that the lawsuit was not frivolous and that there was a legitimate case to be made.
