Delhi HC Turns Down IRPS Officer Anjali Birla’s Plea Against Objectionable Social Media Posts

The Delhi High Court has closed proceedings in a case filed by Anjali Birla, an officer of the Indian Railway Personnel Service (IRPS) and daughter of Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, seeking action against objectionable social media posts circulated about her.

The petition was filed following the spread of allegedly defamatory and false content on various platforms questioning her civil service selection and attempting to tarnish her public image.

Court Observation

During the hearing, the court was informed that social media platforms had complied with previous court directions and removed the objectionable content. In light of this compliance and the absence of any further relief sought, the High Court disposed of the petition.

The court also took note of submissions by the central government and intermediaries regarding compliance with rules under the Information Technology Act, 2000 and emphasized that such content must be swiftly addressed when brought to their attention.

The case underscores the growing judicial engagement with issues of online defamation, privacy, and responsible digital conduct, particularly concerning public officials and individuals in positions of trust.
