Delhi High Court Grants Interim Bail To Convict Kuldeep Singh Sengar For Surgery At AIIMS

The Delhi High Court on Monday granted interim bail to Kuldeep Singh Sengar, the former Uttar Pradesh MLA convicted in the Unnao rape case, to undergo cataract surgery at AIIMS on February 4.

A division bench led by Justice Yashwant Varma directed that Sengar be admitted to AIIMS on February 4 and surrender the following day, February 5. Senior advocate Manish Vasisth, representing Sengar, informed the court that his client had received an appointment for the surgery on that date.

Previously, Sengar was scheduled for surgery on January 24 but surrendered after the procedure was postponed due to the unavailability of the operating doctor. He had been granted interim bail on January 23 for the surgery but returned to custody when the court refused an extension.

Sengar had first received interim bail on medical grounds on December 20, 2024, due to various health issues. However, he surrendered in January after the High Court declined to prolong his release.

Serving a life sentence for raping a minor in Unnao, Sengar is also serving a 10-year term for the custodial death of the victim’s father. The incident dates back to June 4, 2017, when the minor was allegedly lured with a job offer and taken to Sengar’s residence, where he raped her.

Sengar has been in custody since April 13, 2018. He, along with other accused, was convicted by the Tis Hazari Court in 2018. His appeals against both convictions are currently pending before the Delhi High Court.

The cases originate from FIRs filed in 2018 at Makhi Police Station, Unnao, which were later adjudicated by the Sessions Judge (West) at Tis Hazari Court.
