The Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) elections commenced on Friday, following the Delhi High Court’s ruling permitting their conduct.
Voting will be held from 8.30 am – 1 pm for morning shift students, while for the evening shift, it will be held from 3 pm – 7.30 pm.
Court Ruling
The Delhi High Court authorized the DUSU elections under the condition that vote counting would not proceed until the university demonstrates that all campaign-related materials, including posters and graffiti, have been removed and public property restored. Vote counting is scheduled for Saturday.
Additionally, the court mandated that Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and ballot boxes must be securely stored pending further instructions.
Political Statements
Varun Choudhary, National President of the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), urged students to engage actively in the elections, expressing confidence in winning all four central panel seats.
He stated, “Students are concerned about issues like paper leaks and fee hikes. NSUI will secure all four seats today. I call on all students to vote in large numbers. It is essential that counting occurs promptly after polling. We have previously questioned the DU administration regarding the security of ballots.”
In contrast, Yagywalkya Shukla, National General Secretary of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), accused NSUI members of engaging in disruptive behavior on several campuses. Shukla remarked, “Positive feedback for ABVP is coming from all campuses. NSUI’s actions reflect their desperation, as they resort to hooliganism and attempts at booth capturing.”
Previous Election Results
In the 2023 DUSU elections, ABVP won three out of four central panel seats, including the presidential post, with Tushar Dedha elected as president and NSUI’s Abhi Dahiya securing the vice presidency.
