“Is There AI Software For Tracing Missing Persons?”: Delhi HC Questions Police

Delhi High Court

The Delhi High Court has asked the Delhi police whether they have Artificial Intelligence (AI) software capable of helping track missing persons in the city.

The court wants to determine if such technology has been used before or can be implemented, particularly for locating individuals with medical conditions that may make them vulnerable.

Court Seeks AI-Based Search Methods

A bench comprising Justices Prathiba M. Singh and Dharmesh Sharma has instructed the Delhi Police to submit a detailed affidavit explaining whether AI software has been utilized in such cases. The court emphasized the need for innovative tools to improve search efforts.

“The State shall place on record a short affidavit indicating whether any AI software has been or can be used by the Delhi Police to verify and track the whereabouts of missing persons, particularly those with unstable medical conditions,” the court stated.

Missing Person Case Leads To Inquiry

The directive came during the hearing of a plea filed by a man searching for his father, who has been missing since February 2023. Despite following standard procedures, the police have been unable to locate him, as stated in their report to the court.

In light of this, the court instructed the police to explore AI technology as a means of locating the missing person and submit an updated status report based on their findings.

The case is set for the next hearing on March 18.
