Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya

Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya is set to be sworn in as the new Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court by the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi.

The ceremony will take place on Tuesday at 5:00 PM at Raj Niwas, Civil Lines, Delhi. The event will be attended by senior government officials, sitting judges, legal professionals, and dignitaries.

The Central Government, through the Ministry of Law and Justice, announced Justice Upadhyaya’s appointment last week. He will succeed Justice Vibhu Bakhru, who is currently serving as the acting Chief Justice.

On January 7, the Supreme Court Collegium recommended Justice Upadhyaya’s transfer from the Bombay High Court, where he served as Chief Justice. Following this, the President, after consulting the Chief Justice of India, issued a notification transferring Justice Upadhyaya to the Delhi High Court.

Justice Upadhyaya, a 1991 law graduate from Lucknow University, began his legal career at the Allahabad High Court, specializing in civil and constitutional law. He was appointed as an additional judge of the Allahabad High Court in 2011 and became a permanent judge in 2013.

In July 2023, he was appointed Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court.
