The Delhi High Court has found Uday Pal Singh guilty of criminal contempt after he posted a video on social media accusing the judges of engaging in “illegal acts” and favoring the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) in their rulings. Justices Suresh Kumar Kait and Manoj Jain, upon reviewing the video, concluded that Singh’s allegations had clearly undermined the Court’s dignity.
The court stated that Singh’s actions on social media constituted contemptuous allegations against its judges, thereby damaging the integrity of the justice system. Consequently, he was held guilty under the Contempt of Courts Act, 1971. The case is scheduled for a hearing on July 19 to determine Singh’s sentence.
The Court issued its order while handling a criminal contempt petition filed by Sudha Prasad against Uday Pal Singh. Prasad and Singh were involved in ongoing legal disputes over a property in New Ashok Nagar, with multiple civil and criminal cases between them.
On August 24, 2022, Singh posted a video on Facebook and Twitter criticizing the High Court’s decisions and accusing the judges of bias towards the Delhi Development Authority (DDA). In the video, Singh claimed the judges were colluding with the DDA, making illegal decisions, and harming the public.
Singh later issued an unconditional apology, claiming he did not intend to defame the Court or its judges. He asserted that his actions were not meant to scandalize the judges or undermine the Court’s authority.
Despite this, the Court rejected his explanations and ordered him to be physically present on the sentencing day.
