Om Birla’s Daughter Seeks Delhi HC Relief From Defamatory Social Media Posts

Om Birla

Anjali Birla, an IRPS officer and daughter of Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, has filed a defamation suit in the Delhi High Court. She seeks the removal of social media posts alleging she cleared the UPSC exams on her first attempt due to her father’s influence.

In her suit, Anjali Birla asserts that several social media posts spread false and defamatory information about her. She claims these posts are intended to damage her reputation unlawfully.

The suit states, “The false and baseless allegations being disseminated in a brazen manner indicate clear intentions to unlawfully damage the plaintiff’s reputation and standing through defamatory narratives.”

The case was urgently mentioned by Senior Advocate Rajiv Nayar, and Justice Navin Chawla has agreed to hear it today.

The suit claims that individuals are attempting to destroy her professional reputation without any basis in truth, solely to create controversies against the government and target her. The defendants include the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, Google Inc., X Corp (formerly Twitter), and John Doe (a placeholder name for unknown parties).

The suit aims to prevent further misuse and tarnishing of Anjali Birla’s reputation, as well as that of her father, Om Birla. She contends there is a deliberate effort to spread false and disparaging information.

Anjali Birla has also filed a complaint with the Cyber Cell in Maharashtra against several Twitter account holders and others, citing offences under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and the Information Technology Act, 2000. Based on this complaint, an FIR was registered on July 5, 2024, against X Corp and others by the Cyber Cell, Maharashtra.
