Petition Filed In Delhi HC To Cancel WFI Election, Bar President From Further Selections

WFI Election

A petition has been submitted to the Delhi High Court, requesting the cancellation of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) election and the appointment of a court-directed one-man committee.

The petition also seeks to prevent Sanjay Singh from making any further selections.

Sanjay Singh, elected as WFI president in 2023, is seen as an ally of former WFI President Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. Senior advocate Rahul Mehra, representing wrestler Bajrang Punia and others, explained that this writ petition was filed on behalf of Bajrang Punia, Vinesh Phogat, Sakshee Malikkh, and others in preparation for the upcoming Olympic Games.

Advocate Mehra stated that the petition aims to challenge the authority of Sanjay Singh, accusing him of making unauthorized and illegal decisions without proper approval. He questioned why a suspended Federation president, referring to Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, was still involved in decision-making, particularly regarding trial selections.

Mehra pointed out that this individual even sought letters to sway court proceedings and emphasized the need to completely separate the WFI, led by Sanjay Singh, from the World Body and the International Olympic Committee as the Olympic Games approach.

The petition also calls for the court to appoint a one-man committee to oversee the situation. Advocate Mehra mentioned that the matter had been under consideration for 2.5 months, with the final decision being reserved on May 24 and announced today.
