Relocation Of Dairy Colony: Delhi HC Orders Police To Provide Protection To Animal Activist

Delhi High Court

The Delhi High Court has ordered the Delhi Police to assign a beat officer to the home of animal rights activist Sunayana Sibal. This move follows Sibal’s petition, which led to the court mandating the relocation of dairies from Bhalswa to Ghogha.

On August 23, the court, led by Acting Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Manmeet Pritam Singh Arora, instructed the Delhi Police Commissioner to assess the threat to Sibal by August 27. This came after Sibal reported an attempted threat by two unidentified individuals who visited her home while she was away.

The court has expressed serious concern about these threats and has directed the local SHO to ensure Sibal’s safety. It warned that any threats against Sibal would be taken very seriously.

In a recent order, the court directed all relevant authorities, including MCD, DUSIB, GNCTD, and MoHUA, to swiftly relocate the dairies from Bhalswa to Ghogha Dairy Colony. The court noted that the current dairy plots are being misused for commercial and residential purposes without legal sanction.

The court emphasized that shifting the dairies is necessary due to environmental and health concerns, as the cattle are currently feeding on garbage from nearby landfills. It also criticized the statutory authorities for their inaction and set a deadline for compliance.

In previous orders, the court had called for improvements in hygiene, medical care for cattle, and better waste management in dairy colonies. It also mandated the installation of biogas plants and functional veterinary hospitals.

The court appointed a Commissioner to inspect the dairy colonies, revealing issues such as animal cruelty and poor waste management. The petition, filed by Sibal and others, highlights severe animal welfare violations and environmental concerns, including the use of harmful substances like Oxytocin in milk production.
